Hope Wakes Fell Race - Wednesday 29th June 2011 (full results) |
A great evening for racing on one of the toughest courses in the local race series. Paul amply demonstrated his scouse roots by staying ahead of Kevin who is going from strength to strength. Yours truly and James tussled for position coming off Win Hill, but James had the extra speed on the final road section to leave me behind. Dave Parry obviously doesn't share Luigi and Pete's gentlemanly attitude and failed to allow Helen to pass him at the finish. Make the most of it Dave, because Helen now has the measure of you and might not be so ladylike next time! The winner of the race was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in a time of 40:58. There were 262 finishers.

Dam Flask Relays - Tuesday 28th June 2011 (men - full results) (women - full results) |
The relay is run over a 3.5 mile course around Damflask reservoir, starting and finishing in Low Bradfield. The women run over 3 legs and the men over 4 legs. A great night for running and a record number of teams entered. We managed to field two extra teams compared to last year including two women's teams. The men's team was a nearly 2 minutes faster than last year and the Ladies' team was a clear 10 minutes faster! A good time was had by all despite the midge fest at the end. One to note for next year! Well done to everyone who took part.
Hallamshire Harriers won the men's competition in a time of 73:45 and the women's competition in a time of 67:15. There were 77 teams in total. |

Mansfield half marathon - Sunday 26th June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Dave Birch
This race is best summed up by this excerpt from the local paper:
"With the sun shining bright and temperatures hitting 26 degrees, the town produced a massive turn-out of spectators to cheer on the Half Marathon runners in a noisy and colourful spectacle. Despite a breeze, the brand new Half Marathon route proved gruelling with most runners well short of personal best times".
|
Sweat was pouring down my face on the start line, the course was certainly hilly, and not the nicest, with much of the route beside busy roads. The worst of the hills were around mile 3, mile 8 (my slowest of the race), then the final sadistic twist of mile 13 mostly uphill through a housing estate. This seemed to go on forever before the relief of turning into the park and the finish on the track. The race winners were Mark Powell (Tipton) in 1:12:43, and Christine Howard (Matlock) in 1:26:26. 661 runners completed the race.

Blackamoor Chase Fell Race - Thursday 23rd June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
A slightly breezy and cooler than normal June evening saw 10 Striders turn out for Totley AC's Blackamoor Chase race. Yours truly had it in mind that he could be first Strider home, given that Steve H was at home pretending to be recovering from a cold. Only Dean and Simon could possibly put up enough of a fight, but they were no match for someone who's rested for a week. Or so I thought! As usual, the lap of the cricket pitch spread out the field nicely and then the race started. Despite feeling a bit rubbish in the few minutes before the race, I had a comparatively good start, but was quickly caught on the first hill by Simon and then Dean. They gradually pulled away, and I slowed after inexplicably getting a painful blister under my heel.
Dean slowly caught and passed Simon, and despite Simon's attempts to hang on, Dean got away and finished as first Strider in an excellent 52 minutes. I'm beginning to wish I hadn't encouraged him to take up fell running now! Simon followed in around a minute behind. Further back, another very fine run from Helen Calder. I'm glad she's started doing these fell races and think she'll improve significantly as she does more! Very good runs also from Carol and Helen Davis, keeping Pete H. company instead of Kevin Rains who was supposed to be her running buddy for the night but had some pitiful excuse for not making it. Rather gallantly, Pete allowed Helen to cross the line first. I think he must have been taking lessons from Luigi! All in all, a very good evening's racing and a great effort from the team!. The race winners was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in 41:16. There were 206 runners who completed the race. |

Mid Summer Mad Dash Race (4 miles) - Tuesday 21st June 2011 (full results) |
A first event for the Valley Hill Runners - a 5 mile trail race. The course was very well marshalled and for a fell runner, very unusal to see every obsticle marked, even shouts of beware the slippery bridge. An ideal first trail race, but with a good steep hill to challenge the more experienced, which had to be tackeled twice. At a cost of £4, with a £5 voucher for sweatshop this was a bargin of an event. The race was won by Julian Lings from Sheffield Running Club in 26:21. There were 201 finishers.

Killamarsh Three Lakes Classic - Saturday 18th June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
This race has matured over the years and now has 19 marshals positioned at strategic points to prevent competitors going astray. Despite this, together with copious amounts of red tape, a couple of individuals still managed to run off course. No problems however for our own David Palmer who led home the record field of 139 from the gun. Barry Gyte was first M50 (no prize though) with 14 more Striders also competing in this counter to the road race championships. With the dam wall at Ulley Reservoir rebuilt, the route returned to its original version with a full circumnavigation of the lake and as a consequence this year’s race was about 1km longer than recent events. The tea and cake at the finish were as magnificent as ever however whilst the response to those who didn't get any is quite simple - run faster.
There were 139 finishers. |

Grindleford Fell Race - Thursday 16th June 2011 (full results) |
A record 22 Striders took part in this year's race, and the impressive turnout made Striders the joint 2nd best represented club at the event with Barnsley Harriers. A great evening was had by all with the first-timers all agreeing that the little dip in the river Wye in the last 200m of the race made it all worth while. 331 finishers. The winner of the race was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in a time of 31:37. There were 331 finishers.

Baslow Bootbash - Saturday 11th June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
Two seemingly foolhardy Striders set out on this local 27.5mile ultra-marathon around the White Peak countryside with 4300' of ascent. Ostensibly a walker's challenge event, runners are now invited to take part, and a considerable number do so. Yours truly was in the lead for most of the first hour due to 3 faster front-runners taking a wrong turn within a couple of miles of the start. However, this soon changed as I began to tire and they got back into their stride. Most of the second half of the race for me was a blur of agony as my legs gave out, but I managed to plug on and hung on to 6th place by virtue of some poor navigating by the (faster) runners behind me. Knowing the route well is definitely a plus on this one! The 7 checkpoints around the route were manned by some very friendly folk who helped me to keep going when I was at my lowest, and provided the usual walkers fare of squash/water and biscuits: lots of biscuits! At the finish in Baslow Village Hall, there's a warm round of applause as you enter, and you are treated to pie & peas, fruit salad and tea & coffee - if you can still eat (which was not me).
This is a really friendly and well-organised local race which I would recommend to anyone looking to go that bit further with their running! The race was won by mark Fowell in a time of 4 houtrs 17 minutes. there were 205 finishers of which at most 100 were runners or partial runners |

Calver Peak Fell Race - Wednesday 8th June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
Although it threatened rain before the start, this turned out to be another perfect evening for racing (I wonder how long I'll be able to keep saying that?). At the start, Dean shot off like a whippet out of a trap and Phil wasted his breath shouting to him that he'd pay for it later. Despite a start from nearer the back than the front, Louis powered up the first hill racing past me like I was walking. Mind you, I nearly was walking, so that's probably why! He then went on to have a great race with Steve up near the front, only losing out to Steve's superior dancing feet on the fast descent back to Calver. Meanwhile, somewhere further back, Kevin appeared from nowhere, overtook us and disappeared so Simon, Dean and myself were left to have a good old tussle in mid-field before Dean finally gave up when going up the second hill. For once Phil's good advice should have been heeded! It was great to see the Helens out on the night, and both had excellent runs. I hope we'll see more of them both during the rest of the summer. It was also good to see new faces taking part and enjoying it. Antony brought up the rear-guard for the club and hunted down another athlete, passing him just before the line. Unfortunately the other runner seemed to of the opinion that sprinting past someone at the line is not the done thing in fell racing and was rather grumpy. Maybe if he put some of that grumpiness into racing he'd have held his position? An excellent night with 15 Striders taking part in total and making us the 2nd best represented club at the race (of 191 finishers)! The winner was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in a time of 30:30.

This was my first race since fainting through the finish of last years Percy Pud. The conditions were as usual, very hot, 26/27 C, but this year very humid with torrential rain between 5km and 8km. Once again I was the only Brit in the race. There were 235 finishers.

Castleton Fell Race - Friday 3rd June 2011 (full results) |
Report by Phil Howson
It was defiantly a Dunlop Green Flash night last night, the shoe of choice for a real runner. Unfortunately the weather was awful for a fell race when it should be wet and miserable like the author of this. For those who have not done this before it is an easy runable route, if it was not for all the slow fat runners who started too near the front, meaning that I had to walk most of the way up the first slight incline. What disappointed me most about the run was that there wasn't a single runner who had made the effort to put fancy dress on, except for one group of runners who must have been watching the Tour du France and chose to wear the yellow jersey. I do not want to disappoint you, only the leader is supposed to wear that and looking at you lot it is very presumptions. The downhill was a piece of cake as there was a total lack of mud. (I thought it was supposed to be the dark peak) Worst of all at the end, there was the same group of runners in the presumptions yellow jerseys, encouraging all the mates in. This should not be allowed. The winner was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in a time of 42:04. There were 280 finishers.

Buxton half marathon - Sunday 29th May 2011 (full results) |
Report by Adrian Moss
First time for this one, the Buxton AC web site has a route profile, this does slighty unplay the hills, they start as soon as the gun or something goes off. A challenging half, great country side and plenty of support from the numerous sheep and the odd spectator. Nearest similar course would either be a fell race or the Wosborough 5mile course. I recorded 1,480' of climb. A good runner course with non of this 'fun/charity' enteries Sheffield now attracts, Bah Humb! The race was won by Mark Powell of Tipton Harriers in 1.15.30. There were 368 finishers.

Totley Moor Fell Race - Tuesday 24th May 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
After the previous few days of gales and gusting strong wind, I think a few of us were slightly concerned about what the evening at Totley would bring. However, whatever fears we had had gone with the wind and we were treated to a lovely spring evening with a gentle breeze. The race start was delayed by a few minutes due to numbers of athletes registering - up 1/3 on last year, but in the very relaxed atmosphere on the sports ground, nobody really cared. After a charge around the field, with some unscrupulous runners taking the inside line around the marker poles, we were off and on our way up the hill. Up and up, along, then up some more we went. Ian and Dean, who passed me on the first ascent, managed to hold me off until the downhill through Blackamoor. Dean, was first to go, but later claimed he'd eaten a bad banana a few minutes before the race and had been forced to throw it up, which slowed him down. No sooner were we down than we are into the final hill heading back up towards Totley Moor. Somehow I held off Ian going up until just before the gate leading us onto the final descent. Fortunately, Ian was gracious enough to tell me to get a move on and allowed me to lead him down. A mad dash across the fields and back down Moss Road takes us into the sports field and the finish. I'm fully expecting Ian and Simon to come charging past me at this point, but found the energy from somewhere to put in a flourish and finish without being overtaken. All in all, a fantastic race and a wonderful turnout of Striders - 16 in total, with some great improvements on last year's times for many!
Thanks to you all for making the effort to turn up! The race was won by Stuart Bond (Dark Peak) in a time of 33:21. There were 266 finishers.

Tigers Todger - Wednesday 4th May 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
It was a very pleasant evening for this year's Tigers Todger race, although for some reason, this resulted in a slightly lower turnout than last year, and certainly a lower number of Striders. As usual, the race started fast with the run down from the Rugby Club to Whirlow Bridge, then slowed going up through the woods. Alistair shot off down the road, despite, or maybe because of his minimalist footwear, whilst the rest of us struggled further back. Yours truly pushed on up through the woods with Pete Brown (flying Dark Peak colours for some reason) hot on his heels, or perhaps just slip-streaming, all the way up to the top. After a quick run down from Ox-Stones, I tried my best to keep my position near to the 2nd lady, but Helen Gilbert, who had been swapping places with me all the way up the hill managed to get the better of me going back down. Into the final 200m, Simon gathered himself together and burst past me. Jolly unfair at that point in the race, if not entirely unexpected. The bulk of the team finished within a minute and a half with Alistair leading us home by a couple of minutes and the everlasting Pete bringing up the tail for the club. The race winner was Stuart Bond (DPFR) in 32:32 and there were 224 finishers.

3rd South Yorkshire 5 Mile Race at Brodsworth - Wednesday 27th April 2011 |
So you want to design a new course in an area surrounded by quiet, undulating country roads ideal for a 5 mile race? How do you go about it? Do you have over 2 miles of the race held on potentially muddy trails. Or do you include a ridiculously steep hill so that the finish is significantly higher than the start? Or do you have a course which measures only 4.72 miles on the GPS? Surely not. A pity because the parking was excellent, the evening lovely and sunny and the area around Brodsworth was looking its best at this time of year. The winner was John Heneghan (Sheffield RC) in a time of 24:35. There were 290 finishers. Striders times will not count towards club records!

2nd South Yorkshire 5 Mile Race at Bradfield on Wednesday 13th April 2011 |
33 Striders took part on an excellent night for racing – cool with little wind. The course took in one and a third laps of Damflask reservoir with runners only having to climb the hill once (despite some mistakenly saving their energy for a hill finish) The winner was Shaun Dimelow (Barnsley Harriers) in a time of 26:26. There were 295 finishers.

Kinder Downfall - Sunday 10th April 2011 (full results) |
Report by Phil Howson
The 30th Kinder Downfall race from Hayfield, which is one not to be missed, with no manufactured climbs just for the sake of it. Only two striders in the race, Simon Wiles and myself but this still gave plenty of competition with Simon shooting up off the hill leaving me for dead. Luckily for me I was able to overtake him going over the top, on the way to the downfall.
Very hot run with little to cool you down until the stream at the end (see below). Great run, great day, and good meal on the way home. The race was won by Dave Aucott (DPFR) in a time of 1:10:04.
